Turn rooms over faster.

EVS is the cleaning and disinfection engine behind every admission. Impact Training Company helps hospitals make room turnaround faster, safer, and more predictable, applying Flow Physics™ to the work that frees beds.

Where EVS slows flow

  • Room turnaround: beds wait to be cleaned
  • Discharge readiness: rooms not ready
  • Staffing: coverage gaps by shift
  • Bed status: communication delays
  • Quality: rework and recleans

A clean, ready room is the start of every admission

Every minute a bed waits to be cleaned is a minute a patient waits for care. EVS is where throughput begins.

The basics

What is environmental services?

Environmental services, or EVS, is the hospital function responsible for cleaning, disinfection, and room turnaround.

EVS teams prepare rooms for the next patient, maintain infection-prevention standards, and keep the physical environment safe. Their speed and reliability directly determine how quickly beds become available.

Flow Physics™ treats EVS as a flow system, not a cleaning task.

What we improve

The levers that move turnaround

Faster beds without cutting corners on safety or quality.

🔄

Room turnaround time

Faster, more predictable bed-cleaning cycles, from dirty to ready.

🛏

Discharge readiness

Bed-status visibility and coordination so ready rooms do not sit idle.

👥

Staffing & productivity

Coverage models matched to real demand across shifts and units.

🦠

Quality & infection prevention

Consistent standards and less rework, protecting patients and scores.

From 93 minutes to 58

A system-level EVS transformation at a 450-bed tertiary-care teaching hospital, presented as a case study at AHE Exchange26.

The setting: a 450-bed tertiary-care teaching hospital with 1,000+ daily patient movements, high ED demand, complex discharge activity, and heavy room-turnover requirements.

93→58

Minute discharge-to-clean turnaround

Sustained average, 45 to 50 minutes at peak.

35 min

Faster, about a 38% reduction

Measured against a 93-minute baseline.

37.8 min

Cleans held to the AHE standard

Most of the gain came from removing pre-clean delay.

How they did it: the four pillars

  • Demand-aligned staffing, sized to the discharge curve
  • Dispatch ownership, rooms assigned within 2 minutes
  • Standardized workflow with supervisor validation
  • Real-time communication and a live status dashboard

Beyond EVS, the hospital reported reduced ED boarding, more available beds, smoother admissions, and stronger nursing confidence.

The change was not instant: turnaround first rose during the transition before leadership reinforcement brought it to a sustained 58 minutes. Source: hospital operational data, baseline October 2021 to March 2022, phased rollout; AHE cleaning-time standard (37.8 minutes; 60 for isolation).

FAQ

Common questions

What is a good hospital room turnaround time?
AHE guidance sets the standard clean at about 37.8 minutes for a routine discharge and 60 minutes for isolation. Total discharge-to-clean turnaround is measured from the discharge order, and much of the opportunity is in the pre-clean delay, not the clean itself.
How does EVS impact patient flow?
Room turnaround is a direct driver of capacity. When EVS is fast and reliable, beds become available sooner and patients move on time. When turnaround is slow or inconsistent, discharges stall and the emergency department backs up.
What is environmental services (EVS) in a hospital?
EVS is the hospital function responsible for cleaning, disinfection, and room turnaround. EVS teams prepare rooms for the next patient, maintain infection-prevention standards, and keep the physical environment safe.
What productivity benchmarks do you use?
We anchor to recognized AHE cleaning-time standards and to your own discharge-to-clean, idle-time, and room-readiness data, then size staffing to your actual discharge curve rather than to tradition.
Do you provide onsite assessments?
Yes. A diagnostic assessment typically runs a few days and includes a turnaround time study, a staffing and productivity review, and a quality and infection-prevention audit, followed by an executive readout.
Do you help with staffing models?
Yes. We map discharge demand by hour and day and align coverage and dispatch to it, which is usually a larger lever than headcount alone.
Can you train EVS leaders and frontline teams?
Yes. Impact Training Company develops both frontline staff and the supervisors who manage them, with coaching, dashboards, and a daily huddle structure to sustain the gains.
What kinds of hospitals do you work with?
The approach applies across hospital settings, from community hospitals and critical access facilities to academic medical centers and multi-hospital health systems, and it is designed to work within your existing staffing and labor structures.
